How to Ban/Kick Players from Your Server

Get rid of players that ruin your gaming experience.

In Minecraft, banning is drastic, permanently barring players for serious or repeated rule violations, ensuring a positive environment for the rest of the players. You can choose between banning a username or banning their IP.

NOTE: Both the Minecraft server panel console and in-game chat can be used for performing the actions, but for this tutorial we are going to use the in-game chat. This means that operator permissions are required. Click here to find out how to give operator permissions on your Minecraft server.

Banning a Player’s Username

When banning only the username of a player, be careful as they can join again from a different account. In order to stop this from happening, you will have to ban-IP them.

  1. Open the in-game chat
  2. Type /ban <player_name> [reason] replacing <player_name> with the username of the player you want to ban and [reason] with the reason for the ban
  3. Press the Enter key on your keyboard

The player is now banned from the server. They will not be able to join again until they get unbanned.

Banning a Player’s IP

As the command states, you will ban the player’s IP address. Some people that have dynamic IP’s can just restart their routers and connect again so please make sure to also ban their username.

  1. Open the in-game chat
  2. Type /ban-ip <player_name> [reason] replacing <player_name> with the username of the player you want to ban and [reason] with the reason for the ban
  3. Press the Enter key on your keyboard

The player is now banned from the server. They will not be able to join again until they get unbanned.

Unbanning a Player

  1. Open the in-game chat
  2. Type /pardon <player_name> to unban someone’s username or /pardon-ip <IP_address> to unban an IP address.
  3. Press the Enter key on your keyboard

Checking Who Is Banned From Your Server

  1. Open the in-game chat
  2. Type /banlist players in order to see the players that have been banned, and /banlist ips in order to check all the banned IPs.
  3. Press the Enter key on your keyboard and the list will appear in chat.
