Satisfactory Beginner’s Guide: How to Start the Game Right
Satisfactory isn’t your average factory game. It’s a massive open-world packed with dangerous creatures, hidden resources, and one of the most rewarding automation systems out there. But if you’re starting out, it can feel overwhelming. This beginner’s guide will help you start your first world with confidence and avoid the most common early mistakes.
What to Expect From Your First Playthrough
Satisfactory isn’t something you “beat” in 20 hours. Expect to spend 150–200 hours on your first playthrough. That’s not a flaw, it’s part of what makes it special. You’ll go from manually crafting iron plates to building massive, multi-story factories producing thousands of parts per minute.
The early game is slow. You’ll be picking up leaves, chopping down bushes, and building everything by hand. But don’t worry: once you unlock coal power and your first automation lines, the real game begins.
Choose the Right Starting Zone
When creating your first world, pick either:
- Grass Fields – Wide open, flat terrain perfect for beginners
- Rocky Desert – More resources nearby, but slightly tougher terrain
Avoid Northern Forest or Dune Desert until you understand how terrain impacts factory layout and expansion.
Don’t Skip the Intro
You’ll see the option to “Skip to Tier 1” when launching your world. Don’t do it.
The onboarding tutorial (first 2–3 hours) teaches you the basics of:
- Surface mining and resource scanning
- Handcrafting and early automation
- Power generation using biomass burners
Yes, it’s slow. Yes, it’s repetitive. But skipping it will leave you confused later.
Keep Gathering as You Move
Early game electricity runs on biomass, which you make from leaves and wood. Always press E to gather as you move between tasks.
Eventually, you’ll automate biofuel production, but knowing how to gather efficiently now will save time later.
Master the Movement Trick
You can move faster by sliding and jumping in quick succession:
- While sprinting, press C to slide
- Press Space to jump mid-slide
- Tap C as you land to chain the movement.
Use this to explore the map more efficiently, just stick to flat or downhill terrain.
Meet ADA, Your AI Companion
ADA gives important updates while you play. If you miss something she says, open your Inbox (O key) to see the full log of messages.
ADA also provides subtle hints about objectives, enemy threats, and upcoming unlocks.
The Game Will Feel Bad at First. That’s Normal.
It’s normal to feel like Satisfactory “sucks” in the first hour:
- Your starting weapon is weak.
- Everything is crafted by hand.
- Animals keep killing you.
- Factory production is painfully slow.
But give it time. You’ll unlock better weapons, jetpacks, and automation tools that will transform the game.
Stick with it. The reward is worth it.
Get Familiar with the Controls
Some less obvious shortcuts can save you hours later:
- Q – Open build menu
- R – Change build mode
- Ctrl – Snap to grid
- F – Dismantle (Ctrl = multi-delete)
- M – Map (after unlocking it)
- V – Resource scanner
- Middle Mouse – Copy a structure
- B – Flashlight
- Tab – Inventory
- ALT + Scroll Wheel – Cycle hotbars
Pick a Location Near These Resources
In your first few hours, prioritise locating and building near:
- Iron – For rods and plates
- Copper – For wire and cable
- Limestone – For concrete
You’ll also find limiting enemies near valuable nodes. Fight or avoid, but always note where they are.
Use Manual Miners Early On
Before you unlock MK1 Miners, build multiple Manual Miners:
- No power required
- An easy way to stockpile materials
- Helps during tutorial upgrades
You’ll need to manually collect ore from them, but it’s better than waiting around.
Final Tips Before Automation Begins
- Don’t build your hub too far from resource nodes.
- Use crafting benches near mining nodes to stay productive
- As soon as you unlock Splitters and Mergers, begin your first automation lines
- Build a small “mall” to store your most common parts (plates, rods, cables, wire)
- Start planning vertically—your factory will grow fast
Once you reach Tier 3 and unlock Coal Power, the beginner phase ends—and the real Satisfactory experience begins.
