Minecraft 1.21.5 Update: Spring to Life

Minecraft has released a new version, titled Spring to Life, and it brings a whole lot of biome-based updates that impact farm animals, decorative blocks, ambient sounds, and much more. This isn’t just a small polish update, it’s a world-building overhaul focused on environmental depth and immersive atmosphere.

Here's what players can expect in Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5.

New Variants for Pigs, Cows, and Chickens

Three of Minecraft’s most familiar mobs now adapt based on the biome they spawn in. Pigs, cows, and chickens will appear in cold, temperate, or warm variants depending on the environment.

Cold variants spawn in areas like Snowy Plains, Taiga, or Frozen Oceans. Warm variants appear in deserts, jungles, and badlands. The existing animal textures now act as the temperate versions, used in neutral biomes.

Two new egg types have also been added:

  • Blue Egg for cold chickens
  • Brown Egg for warm chickens

Breeding mechanics have changed slightly. When two variants breed, the baby mob randomly takes one of the parents’ appearances, regardless of the current biome.

Sheep Wool is Now Based on Biome

Sheep now spawn with wool color influenced by biome temperature.

  • Temperate biomes: Mostly white wool, with occasional gray, black, brown, or rare pink.
  • Cold biomes: Mostly black wool, with similar uncommon color variants.
  • Warm biomes: Mostly brown wool, plus the same set of uncommon options.

This change makes sheep farms more visually diverse and location-specific.

Ambient Wolf Sound Variants

Wolves now have seven unique sound variants that affect their idle, hurt, death, growl, whine, and panting audio. These are randomly assigned when a wolf spawns and include variations like "Big", "Sad", "Puglin", and others.

Sound variants are cosmetic only and do not affect textures or behavior.

Visual Overhaul for Spawn Eggs

Every mob’s spawn egg has been redesigned. Egg visuals are now more detailed, with size scaling based on the mob it spawns. This improves both in-game visibility and accessibility.

New Decorative World Features

This update adds a long list of small decorative blocks and environmental effects to enhance biome diversity.

Highlights include:

  • Fallen Trees (in oak, birch, jungle, and spruce variants)
  • Firefly Bush (emits light and particles at night)
  • Leaf Litter (biome-tinted forest ground cover)
  • Wildflowers (up to four per block, generates in birch forests and meadows)
  • Short and Tall Dry Grass (exclusive to deserts and badlands)
  • Bushes (found in plains, rivers, and other natural areas)
  • Cactus Flower (blooms on cactus, craftable into pink dye)

These additions are designed for immersion rather than utility, but they open up new possibilities for naturalistic building and custom biome aesthetics.

Falling Leaf Particles

Falling leaves are now present under all tree types that did not previously have them. This includes acacia, birch, jungle, spruce, and more. This minor detail helps biomes feel more alive.

New Ambient Sounds in Desert and Badlands

Specific blocks like sand, red sand, terracotta, and dead bushes can now emit low ambient audio cues. Sounds include sand shifting and wind, and they vary based on surrounding blocks and biome context.

Quality-of-Life Changes

  • Beacons now render farther and grow visually thicker at long distances
  • Camels now spawn naturally in deserts
  • Chickens, cows, pigs, and sheep can spawn in badlands
  • Realms uploads now support hardcore worlds and enable command blocks by default
  • Cartographer and Wandering Trader trades have been expanded and rebalanced
  • Lodestones can now be crafted differently and found in Ruined Portals
  • Simulation distance rules have been tweaked for better tick behavior
  • New language support: Kyrgyz

Technical Additions and Game Test System

For developers and advanced users, Minecraft has added the Game Tests system to run data pack-based tests. This allows for test-driven mod and feature development using structure blocks or command-line automation. It also introduces a new /test command for managing test environments and results.

Additional changes include:

  • Entity data format improvements
  • New item components for blocking mechanics and potion scaling
  • Updated NBT and SNBT behavior
  • Refined tooltip control
  • New particle effects for fireflies and leaves
  • Saddle slot added to pig and strider equipment models

Bug Fixes

Over 100 bugs have been fixed in this release, including issues related to sound, particle desyncs, saddle visibility, crossbow animations, and mob behavior in various biomes. Full bug reports can be found on the official Minecraft issue tracker.
